Former president Mamnoon Hussain passes away

Former president of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain passed away Wednesday in Karachi, reported 24NewsHd TV channel.

He was 80. His son Arsalan Mamnoon confirmed the death of the former president.

The former president was suffering from cancer and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the last two weeks, his son said.

Mamnoon Hussain was the 12th president of Pakistan, who served from 2013 to 2018 during the tenure of the PML-N. He was one of the most senior PML-N leaders.

The deceased had earned an MBA degree from the prestigious Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi. He originally hailed from Agra in India

Born in Agra, British India in 1940, his family migrated to settle in Karachi in 1949.

After being home schooled, Hussain enrolled in Karachi University where he studied for the Commerce degree. After graduating from the Karachi University in 1963, he entered the master's program at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) in Karachi and obtained his MBA degree in 1965.

Initially supporting and strengthening his father's business, he later founded his own textile company in Karachi. He later joined the center-right Pakistan Muslim League in 1970, working as a party worker. In 1997, he earned public notability as a business leader when he was elected as president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, serving until May 1999.

Originally a businessman, Mamnoon Hussain had started his political career as a Muslim Leaguer in 1969. At the time, he was made the joint secretary of the Karachi chapter of the League when former minister of state for foreign affairs Zain Noorani was its president.

Condolences 

The country’s leadership expressed grief and condolences on the demise of former president Mamnoon Hussain.

In his condolence tweet, President Arif Alvi expressed his heartfelt and deep condolences on the sad demise of former President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain. “I had been worried about his health and had talked to his son only a few days ago. May his soul rest in peace,” the president’s tweet reads.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, in his message, expressed condolence on the demise of former president Mamnoon Hussain. 

He expressed his heartfelt condolences on the demise. May Allah bless his soul and give and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss, he prayed.  

PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif in his condolence tweet said, “Today, we have lost a valued person who loved Pakistan and had a good character.” “He was Nawaz Sharif’s trustworthy, logy, and ideological companion. He steadfastly stood by the party through all the highs and lows. His services for the country and the nation will be remembered for long,” Shahbaz said. 

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz said Mamnoon Hussain was a sincere person. She prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace. 

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, in his message, said, “My deepest condolences on the passing of former President of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain. May Allah grant his family the strength to bear this great loss.”

Sindh chief minister's adviser Murtaza Wahab said, “Heard about the sad news of the death of President Mamnoon Hussain. He served his office with grace & dignity. May Allah bless his soul & give strength to the bereaved family.”

PML-N leader Afzal Khokar tweeted, “Heartiest condolences to the family and well wishes of our former president Mamnoon Hussain. May our prayers ease the pain of the family in this difficult time.”
