Stresses need for new Islamabad master plan

Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Wednesday the moment the paper system of record-keeping was done away with in the country chances of fraud were eliminated to a great extent, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, he said, “It is our priority to introduce e-system in the country in order to ensure transparency.”

Informing that there were nine million overseas Pakistanis with whose cooperation the country was run, he said the government wanted to give them the right to vote. “And it is our desire that before they participate in the electoral system, system of e-voting is introduced in the country so that the desired results could be achieved,” the prime minister said, and stressed the need for making technology part of everyday life so that hassle could be avoided.

Similarly, he added, in order to avoid controversies in elections, the government wanted to computerize all the election-related record so that the opposition did not have any hesitation to accept the election results.

Addressing the NADRA chairman, who was also present on the occasion, PM Imran said the government expected you to facilitate masses through the use of technology.

He further said the government was also keen to make land record computerized so that property disputes could be avoided. “Earlier it was easy to either steal or burn files of land registries. “But now, such type of incidents could be done away with courtesy online system of keeping record,” the prime minister said, and added, “Likewise, overseas Pakistanis had to travel all the way from the countries they were living in to get succession certificates. But now they need not travel as they can get these certificates through biometric verification.”

Later addressing the launching ceremony of different development projects in Islamabad, Prime Minister Imran Khan stressed the need for devising a new master plan for the federal capital in order to deal with the effects of rapidly increasing construction activities which were consuming green areas of the city.

He said now when the monsoon season had begun, there should be maximum plantation in the entire country, and that he wanted Islamabad to take a lead in this regard.

The prime minister told the gathering that Islamabad received rain equal to that of London, but here the land mafias had devastated the green areas. “Now when I ask the Islamabad IGP about the land grabbers, he tells me that whosoever is arrested in connection with land grabbing, is later released by the courts,” PM Imran regretted.

But now, he added, the government was going to enact a law to combat with these land mafias.

He also stressed the need for developing parks for recreation. “Previously, Capital Development Authority (CDA) was suffering the loss of Rs4 to Rs5 billion, but now it had Rs36 billion in its account,” he disclosed.

PM Imran said the pace of urbanization in the country was fastest in the entire world. “Situation in Lahore is not promising either. The city has expanded enormously during the last 20 years. Pollution levels in the provincial capital, particularly during the winter season, go up. Therefore, there is a need to plant more and more trees there to protect the environment,” he asserted.

He said that Peshawar confronted the same situation as it had also undergone rapid urbanization in recent times, adding the authorities there were trying to make the city greener. “Actually, now the competition is between Islamabad and Peshawar in terms of tree plantation,” he said.
