The Civil Aviation Authority has downgraded the category of Nawabshah Airport from 4E to 4C, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Planes like Boeing 777 will not land at the airport after the downgrading of its category.
It has been learnt that after the downgrading of the Nawabshah Airport, the Multan Airport will be used as an alternative airport for Karachi flights.
Before this, the Karachi-bound flights used to land at Nawabshah Airport whenever there was an emergency or rough weather in Karachi.
The CAA on Friday issued the new notification regarding downgrading of the Nawabshah Airport.
Now only Airbus 320, Boeing 737 and other lower category planes can land at Nawabshah Airport:
The CAA spokesperson confirmed the downgrading of the Sindh airport from 4E to 4C.
Due to heavy monsoon rains and floods that hit country last year, the Nawabshah Airport runway was damaged, the spokesperson added.
A "4C" runway is one that's 1,800 meters or more in length and capable of handling an aircraft with a wingspan of up to 36 meters and landing gear that's less than 9 meters between the outside edges of the outermost wheels.
While, an Aerodrome with a reference code 4E can accommodate aircraft with a “Reference Field Length” of 1800m and above and a wingspan up to 65m.
