The Punjab Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for Jhang district and directed the district administration to make necessary arrangements to avoid any untoward incident.
As per the documents available with the 24NewsHD Digital, Isra in its advisory to Irrigation department said, “Excessive discharge of water from Mangla Dam due to water shortage in Sindh could lead to flooding in low lying areas along the river in Jhang.”
The irrigation department has directed the district administration to be ready to deal with any situation.
Punjab Irrigation department issued direction after a recent advisory issued by Irsa said that due to lower-than-normal temperatures, the flow of water in the Indus River is also below normal, which is insufficient for the needs of the southern parts of Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab.
“Currently, Irsa is releasing excess water from Tarbela Dam to meet this shortage, but if the level of Tarbela Dam falls below 1450 feet, additional discharge of water from Mangla will be necessary to meet the water shortage,” Irsa advisory said.
The document reads, “In the next few days, from 100,000 cusecs to 125,000 cusecs of water could be released from the Mangla Dam to supplement the supplies to lower riparian depending upon the shortage position in Tarbela Dam and provincial indent.”
Isra said in view of situation, the Punjab Irrigation Department has issued flood warning in the flood plains of Jhelum and Chenab banks, especially in the flood plains of Jhang, urging each and every district administration to be ready.
