Former Pakistan captain Shahid Khan Afridi said that if Virat Kohli wanted to develop his skills more as a batsman, he should relinquish his captaincy of all formats.
Talking to the media, Afridi said, “I think Virat Kohli should step down as a captain and enjoy only the cricket he has left, which I think is enough. He is a top batsman and without any further pressure on his mind. He can play freely. He will enjoy his cricket, he said.
"I think he has been a great force for Indian cricket, but I think it would be better for him to decide to retire as captain of all formats now," Afridi said.
The former captain also praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for naming Rohit Sharma as the new captain for T20Is and also spoke about the experience when Rohit was his teammate for defunct Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise ‘‘Deccan Chargers’’ for one year.
Afridi said, "I have played with Rohit for a year, and he is a great player with a first-rate intelligence. The biggest advantage is that he can stay calm where needed and when needed. If so, it can be aggressive. "
Afridi claimed that Sharma has the mental capacity to be a strong leader as he highlighted his success as the captain of Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
"He is a top notch player with an excellent shot selection and a good player has the mindset to be a leader," Afridi said.
It is pertinent to mention here Kohli has already resigned as T20 captain and has been replaced by Rohit Sharma by the BCCI.
