Punjab Assembly passed the Local Government Bill 2011 with the majority, 24News HD TV channel reported on Wednesday.
The assembly session on Wednesday started two hours and 36 minutes late than its scheduled time. PA Speaker Sabtain Khan presided over the session.
Soon after reciting verses of Holy Quraan and the Naat, the House adopted Question Hour and Provincial Minister for Environment Raja Basharat answered the queries of the colleagues regarding the environment department.
Later, the Provincial Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Raja Basharat presented the Local Government Bill 2021 which was adopted by the house with the majority.
During the session, the opposition benches pointed out the quorum, but the speaker ignored it and continued the proceedings of the meeting, on which the opposition members walked out.
In the Wednesday session, the annual performance report of Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority and Ring Road Authority Punjab was also tabled while opposition’s Malik Ahmad Khan demanded to form a committee for the wheat season for the flood-affected areas.
After completing the agenda of the day, Speaker Sabatin Khan adjourned the Punjab Assembly session till September 28, 2022, at 3:00 pm.
It is worth mentioning that according to the Local Government Bill 2021, the upcoming local government elections in Punjab will be held on a party basis.
Punjab will have 25 District Councils and 11 Metropolitan Corporations and the people will elect the mayor directly while development authorities and subordinate institutions will be under the elected mayor.
The tehsil councils and town councils have been abolished in the bill and now the union councils will be formed in villages and towns.
Every village in Punjab will have a Village Panchayat Council and all 36 districts of Punjab will have District Cabinets to address the local issues.
