A recent report by the United Kingdom Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) has revealed that at least nine professional footballers have tested positive for banned substances since 2022. Among those identified are players from the English Premier League, the report confirmed.
Surprisingly, not a single one of the affected players has been banned from competition so far. According to the report, the Football Association (FA) allowed all the players to continue playing, citing either medical justifications or the legal manner in which the substances were taken.
These cases are distinct from those involving high-profile players like Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk and former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, both of whom have faced formal action.
UKAD’s report highlighted the presence of substances such as Tamoxifen, Triamcinolone, and Amphetamine in the players’ systems. These drugs are known not for enhancing strength directly but for aiding in weight loss, muscle development, endurance, and overall physical performance.
A spokesperson for UKAD emphasised that a positive drug test does not automatically indicate a doping violation. Athletes with legitimate medical needs can obtain clearance through a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).
Mykhailo Mudryk of Ukraine reportedly tested positive during a routine doping check ahead of an international match in December 2024. While Mudryk denied using performance-enhancing drugs, the Ukrainian Football Association is currently considering a ban against him.
