The Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Thursday raised legal questions about the dissolution of assemblies on the instructions of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
While talking exclusively to City42 TV channel, AGP Ashtar Ausaf Ali Khan said that the dissolution of assemblies on the directive of disqualified Imran Khan was a question mark.
“Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi will have no constitutional role for the caretaker set-up after the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly,” he added.
“Dissolution of the assemblies on the directive of Imran Khan is a legal question. It is the time for a charter of economy not the demand for elections,” he emphasised.
“Dissolving the assembly is the discretionary power of the chief minister, but dissolving the assembly at the behest of someone is a legal question,” he added.
“After the dissolution of the assembly, it is the authority of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the caretaker government to conduct new elections,” he averred.
“The ECP has to conduct the election within 90 days. It can also delay the holding of elections. New constituencies have to be demarcated before the new election. Other legal requirements have to be fulfilled,” he stated.
“There are no such circumstances that new elections will be held within 90 days after the dissolution of the assemblies. The dissolution of assemblies stops all the development work,” he added.
