The Election Commission of Pakistan on Sunday disapproved of the statement of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah saying that his statement was meant to misguide people, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The ECP spokesperson said that the interior minister’s statement showed his little understanding of the election laws. He said that the commission was fulfilling its constitutional and legal responsibilities in efficient manner.
He said that the ECP was accused of using old voters’ lists during the local government elections in Karachi and Hyderabad. He rejected all allegations regarding delimitations of the constituencies as baseless.
He further stated that it was the responsibility of the provincial government to provide total number of union councils.
The spokesperson said that the provincial government, in its notification, provided the number of UCs in every district.
He explained that according to law, the election commission was responsible to carry out demarcation of the UCs according to their number (provided to it). And the ECP did their demarcations in a transparent manner as per the law, he added.
He further stated that the case of these delimitations was different from Islamabad’s case as the number of the UCs were increased in the federal capital during election schedule.
The ECP spokesperson said that the commission was ready to conduct the local government elections in Islamabad within 7 to 10 days.
