Amid the looming security threats on Diamir Bhasha Dam, the Federal Cabinet has approved the deployment of 120 contingents of Pakistan Army troops in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamir District to protect the under-construction reservoir, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday, quoting its sources.

The decision to deploy the military to guard the Diamir Bhasha Dam was made after the Gilgit-Baltistan government forwarded a request for it.

Pakistan Army soldiers will remain in Diamir District till December 2020. The approval of the federal cabinet was obtained through circulation summary on the direction of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the sources maintained.

These sources claimed that Gilgit-Baltistan Home Department had received threat alerts during the acquisition of land for the dam and on the Karakoram Highway.

The construction of Diamir Bhasha Dam, which will cost Rs443 billion, has been kicked off.

Gilgit Baltistan Home Department had requested to call in Army troops under Article 245 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The sources said that several Indian spies have been arrested from Gilgit-Baltistan area recently.
