Believe it or not, it is a fact that during Shehbaz Sharif's tenure as Prime Minister, electricity prices have reached unprecedented levels with a historically massive increase of up to Rs 25.76 per unit in just two years.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, electricity consumers have also borne the burden of quarterly and monthly adjustments separately.

The sources said for the first time under Shehbaz's government, fixed charges of up to Rs 1,000 were also imposed on domestic electricity consumers.

In the last two years, the base tariff for electricity has seen a historic rise of Rs22.53 per unit. Additionally, a permanent surcharge of Rs 3.23 per unit has been levied on consumers.

Including this surcharge, the total increase in the electricity tariff over two years amounts to Rs 25.76 per unit.

Sources said over Rs2 trillion in additional costs have been imposed on electricity consumers within the two-year period.

The sources said from July to October 2022, the base tariff increased by Rs7.91 per unit, while in July 2023, it rose by Rs7.50 per unit. A permanent surcharge of Rs 3.23 per unit was also imposed in July 2023.

In July 2024, the base tariff was increased by Rs7.12 per unit. These increases and surcharges were approved by the federal cabinet.
