Bollywood actress Vidya Balan, who has done films in languages beyond Hindi, finds herself in a great space.
Even after having delved into a variety of subjects, the actress says, “I am still as passionate, and that has not changed at all. I am here to stay; I don’t feel I need to clock in the number of films I have done.”
As an actress, she is excited about how the Indian audience today is opening its doors to all kinds of content, breaking barriers of region and language.
Talking to BT on this topic, she had said, “There is an audience for all kinds of films. There are very few films that find universal appeal. The good thing is that we have different audiences for different kinds of films. Today, the audience will watch a good film irrespective of its language. In our country, all kinds of films thrive. Non-Hindi speaking people watch Hindi films with subtitles, likewise, regional films are watched by people across with subtitles. This is making the experience of a film richer.”
She further added, “The Indian audience is ready for all kinds of films and content. There are no pre-set ideas or formulas now, or any compulsion that a story has to have certain tropes or has to be about people from a certain region to work with the audience. People are exposed to all kinds of content. I love the way conversations are happening about cinema. For instance, when I watched 'Narcos', it took me two episodes to realise that it is not in English, can you believe it? This is a great example of how language is not a barrier. In cinema, what you are trying to communicate is what’s important; the language doesn’t matter.”
