Girl stumbles to death on first day of school in Karachi

A teenage girl died on the first day of school after falling from stairs in Karachi as police said they were gathering information while Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani sought a report on the issue, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.

The tragic incident was reported at a private school in Gulberg – a neighbourhood located in District Central of Karachi.

According to the school owner, Areeba, 15, fell from a staircase comprising six steps. There were very few students in the school being the first academic day after a long break caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

He also claimed that her parents were called soon after the incident. The student was rushed to a private hospital where the doctors pronounced her dead, the school owner added.

But Ghani, who ordered the district education officials to conduct an inquiry to ascertain the causes and why she wasn’t shifted to the hospital immediately.

Earlier, hundreds of thousands of universities, colleges, schools and madrassas reopened throughout Pakistan on Tuesday, ending an over six-month-long closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The authorities in Pakistan have planned to resume educational activities in phases 187 days after suspending them.

However, the students from class six to eight will be called to schools from September 23 and those enrolled below class six are scheduled to resume their studies from September 30. 

All educational institutions across the country were closed in late February after the coronavirus pandemic took roots.
