International Day of Democracy is being marked throughout the world, including Pakistan today, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had designated September 15 as the day of democracy.

People’s basic rights enjoy complete protection in a democratic society.

And despite the fact that parliamentary democracy has always been in danger in Pakistan, the system has always ensured that human rights are protected.

In his statement in connection with the day, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Vice Chairman Qazi Khizar has said that in democracies there is justice and people’s freedoms are guarded.

Sohail Solangi, a senior journalist, on the other hand, has said, Greece was the first country in the world to have a democratic setup. “And so far, over 150 countries have signed the charter of democracy,” he has said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has renewed the pledge to promote and strengthen democracy in the country.

In his message on the International Day of Democracy, he said the government was committed to adhering to the democratic values as enshrined in the constitution, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights.

In her message on the occasion of International Day of Democracy, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has commented, “Long Live Democracy, Long Live Pakistan.”

She has said that on this day she saluted the services rendered by her father, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and others for democracy.

Maryam claimed that it was her party, the PML-N, which had always adhered to democratic values and put the country on the path to progress.

She said democracy was necessary if the country was to develop and become prosperous. “Democracy is not only a system of government. But it is also the name of an ideology,” she remarked.
