Advocate Shoaib Shaheen, counsel for former prime minister and ex-PTI Chairman Imran Khan, on Tuesday was astonished to find out that the hearing of the case of contempt of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and chief election commissioner (CEC) against his client was being held at the ECP office, and not inside the Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
A four-member bench of the election commission, headed by member Sindh, heard the case.
Speaking during the hearing, Advocate Shaheen said he had no idea that there would be no jail trial today. “No notice was issued to us in this regard,” he said.
He complained that unlike other parties, the PTI was not being provided a level playing field in the run-up to the general elections. “And to rub salt into our wounds, the ECP is hearing a contempt case against the party’s founder.”
Member Balochistan, in his reply, asked him, “Does he expect the commission not to react to the abuses hurled at us by the PTI leaders?”
Advocate Shaheen asked as to why no action was action against the leaders of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) despite the fact that they spat venom at the Supreme Court (SC). “As many as 150 party leaders have been booked in Rahim Yar Khan,” he lamented.
Member Balochistan told him if PTI leaders and workers would attack the election staff, what else the police could do.
PTI founder’s lawyer said the nation looked up to the ECP and other institutions for justice.
