A girl was in a critical condition after receiving severe burns in an acid attack, in which three other family members were also injured, over her refusal to a marriage proposal near Sialkot.

Police have registered FIR and arrested the main accused Shehbaz.

According to details, Ayesha Tayyab, 22, a resident of Ismail Awan in the Motra area, was at her home when three attackers climbed over the walls and threw acid on the family.

As a result, Ayesha, her sister-in-law and two babies were injured. Meanwhile, Ayesha was later shifted to the Mayo Hospital, Lahore, as she has had severe burns on her face and other body parts.

Violence against women is on the rise in our society despite the introduction of various laws to curb the practice. As far as the acid attacks are concerned, the Senate had passed ‘The Acid and Burn Crime Bill, 2018’ that promised rehabilitation for the victims.

But there is very little effect on such crimes, as more and more incidents are being reported from across the country. Apart from the cultural practices, the rising trend of extremism is also a factor in this respect.
