The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the by-election in PP-269 Muzaffargarh which was scheduled to be held on May 18, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The electoral watchdog issued the notification in the light of Islamabad High Court's decision. The by-election was subjected to the results of the recount by the RO.
The seat became vacant following the resignation of PPP candidate Alamdar Abbas Qureshi in an apparent attempt to avoid a recount of balloting papers on the application of runner-up candidate Iqbal Pitafi.
According to the RO, 18 candidates are contesting the elections, with PPP and PML-N fielding Alamdar Qureshi while Mr Pitafi was running as PTI candidate.
Earlier, Iqbal Khan, a candidate for the PP-269 by-poll, who had been injured in an accident, passed away at Nishtar Hospital in Multan on Saturday. Earlier, Returning Officer (RO) of the PP-269 by-poll Nasir Shahzad Dogar said the candidate’s death would not affect the polling scheduled for May 18 in Muzaffargarh.
