The Supreme Court on Monday accepted the petition to provide details of its employees under the Right to Information Act, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The Supreme Court ordered the Registrar’s Office to provide the details of the employees within seven days.

“The Supreme Court registrar shall provide the information to the petitioner within seven days,” the court directed.

Justice Athar Minallah wrote an additional note in the judgment.

“The Right to Information Act also applies to the Supreme Court,” the apex court in its ruling said.

“Access to information is a right of citizens under Article 19A,” it added.

The court had reserved the judgement on September 27 last after the arguments of petitioner Mukhtar Ahmed and the attorney general.

The former Supreme Court registrar had refused to provide details of the employees after which the petitioner had approached the Information Commission.

The Information Commission had asked the then Supreme Court registrar to provide information.

The registrar had approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the decision of the Information Commission.

The petitioner had approached the Supreme Court after the IHC had ruled in favour of the Supreme Court registrar.
