The United States and Canada on Tuesday announced sanctions against the pro-Palestinian organization Samidoun, accusing it of being a fundraising front for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

The PFLP, accused of orchestrating waves of attacks against Israelis over decades, is designated as a terrorist organization by both Washington and Ottawa.

The US Treasury Department on Tuesday said Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network was based in Vancouver and actually "a sham charity that serves as an international fundraiser" for the PFLP.

Public Safety Canada meanwhile said it had determined that Samidoun met the definition of "a terrorist group" under the country's criminal code.

The coordinated US and Canadian action exposes individuals who associate with or financially contribute to Samidoun to potential penalty, among other measures.

Samidoun describes itself as an international network of activists working for Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

The PFLP "uses Samidoun to maintain fundraising operations in both Europe and North America," the US State Department said Tuesday in a statement.

Germany had previously announced sanctions against Samidoun last year.

The PFLP is a secular Palestinian group with Marxist-Leninist origins that emerged following the 1967 Six Day War.

It was once a key force in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, although its influence declined following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The Treasury Department first sanctioned the PFLP in 1997 and on Tuesday said "it remained committed to terrorist activity" through its armed wing.

The Treasury Department also announced sanctions against Khaled Barakat, an individual it described as a Canadian citizen and PFLP member who "serves as serves as part of the group’s leadership abroad."
