Dozens of deaths due to devastating downpours and flash flooding have been reported during 24 hours in Balochistan and KP while a red alert has been issued as India released water in Ravi, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Eleven persons including children and women died in Balochistan while scores were injured and hundreds of families were hit across the province. Hundreds of houses were damaged in the province. Qila Abdullah and Kohlu reportedly suffered the most.
Educational activities in the capital of Sindh were affected due to the torrential rains. The Board of Higher Secondary Education has postponed the papers scheduled for August 18. The exams will be held on August 25.
The Sindh government announced a holiday in educational institutions on August 18. According to the Sindh Education and Literacy Department, all private and public educational institutions will remain closed on the 18th.
A vehicle was swept away in the relay in Quetta. Five people including children died. More than 150 houses were destroyed in Kohlu. Roads were closed in Musa Khel.
The PDMA reported six deaths during a downpour in the last 24 hours in KP. It added that 20 houses were partially damaged and six people were injured.
The water level in the rivers started to rise continuously. Thousands of acres of land were submerged and hundreds of cattle were washed away.
Bridge collapsed near Naran. Two persons including a woman were killed and six injured in Bara Jamrud and Landi Kotal in Khyber district in a roof collapse.
Flooding in the river channels of South Waziristan raised the alert. Two children died in a wall fall. Thousands of acres of land were destroyed and hundreds of people were made homeless.
Relief review
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over a meeting on the flood situation and reviewed relief activities. The prime minister issued directives to step up the relief operation and provide the affected people with all-out support.
He said complete rehabilitation and immediate assistance to the flood victims is the top priority of the incumbent government.
He directed that a joint survey should be conducted in Balochistan to estimate the damages that occurred due to the recent floods. The Prime Minister also emphasized ensuring transparency in the provision of relief assistance to the affected people.
He directed that authorities concerned to ensure the provision of cash assistance to flood victims through the National Disaster Management Authority electronic transfer.
The meeting was informed in detail about the data of the deaths, injured, damaged houses, and livestock. The meeting was further informed that the survey will be initiated from Sunday till the 20th of next month in the flood-affected areas of Balochistan.
