All-rounder Salman Ali Agha delivered a match-winning performance, claiming 4/32 to help Pakistan to limit South Africa to 239/9 in the opening game of the three-match ODI series at Boland Park on Tuesday.
Despite Heinrich Klaasen’s valiant 86, the Proteas struggled to post a competitive total.
South Africa, led by stand-in captain Aiden Markram, opted to bat first after winning the toss. The decision initially paid off as openers Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton put on a solid 70-run partnership in just 59 balls.
De Zorzi contributed 33 off 25 with six boundaries, while Rickelton added 36 from 38 balls, striking seven fours.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Salman Ali Agha was introduced into the attack.
He dismissed both openers in successive overs before removing Rassie van der Dussen (1) and Tristan Stubbs (1) in his fourth over, leaving South Africa struggling at 88/4.
Markram and Klaasen then steadied the innings with a crucial 73-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Markram scored a patient 35 off 54 balls but fell to debutant Saim Ayub, who claimed his maiden ODI wicket.
Klaasen continued to fight, showcasing his skill with an 86-run knock off 97 balls, including seven fours and two sixes.
His dismissal in the 45th over, courtesy of Shaheen Shah Afridi, left South Africa unable to capitalize in the death overs.
Late contributions from Kagiso Rabada (11) and Ottneil Baartman (10 not out) added 21 runs for the ninth wicket before Rabada was run out on the final ball of the innings.
Salman Ali Agha spearheaded Pakistan’s bowling attack, finishing with figures of 4/32.
Abrar Ahmed provided support with two wickets, while Shaheen Afridi and Saim Ayub chipped in with one apiece.
Pakistan will now look to chase the 240-run target on a pitch offering early assistance to bowlers, aiming to secure a 1-0 lead in the series.
