Declaring the electric grid station built on a greenbelt in Mehmoodabad area of the provincial capital as ‘illegal’, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the Karachi Electric (K-Electric) to remove the grid station within two months, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Gulzar Ahmad remarked that since the grid station was occupying a space on the greenbelt, therefore, it was illegal.
The CJP was hearing petitions at SC’s Karachi Registry regarding anti-encroachment operation in the megacity
The CJP not only ordered the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to restore the greenbelt to its original position but also develop a park on it. “The greenbelt could not be allowed to be used for commercial purposes,” CJP Gulzar said categorically.
Shuaun Nabi Advocate, on the occasion, told the court that 10 acres of land were reserved for the greenbelt in PECHS, Mehmoodabad, and that the belt was the KMC’s property.
