Advocate General Punjab Muhammad Shan Gul has resigned from his post citing personal reasons, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
In his letter of resignation sent to Punjab governor and chief minister on Saturday, Shan Gul said his resignation will be effective from June 27.
Earlier in the day, 24News TV channel reported that the Punjab government was unhappy with the performance of Shan Gul regarding cases against the perpetrators of incidents of violence on May 9 and has decided to seek his resignation.
Sources told 24News TV channel that the Punjab cabinet had agreed to ask Shan Gull to step down.
And in the event of his refusal to relinquish the post, they added, he would be denotified.
The sources further disclosed that the provincial government had already started looking for his replacement.
Provincial prosecutor general on his way out
Irked by prosecution’s failure to strongly pursue cases of miscreants involved in incidents of violence on May 9, the Punjab government has also decided to sack Prosecutor General Punjab Chaudhry Khaliquz Zaman.
Quoting its sources, the channel reported that the provincial cabinet had agreed to relieve Zaman of his duties, and the notification for his dismissal would be issued after Chief Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi’s approval.
Zaman had been appointed as the prosecutor general by the last Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.
Sources further told the channel that the prosecutor general belonged to Gujrat and was also Elahi’s close relative.
They said that the provincial government was annoyed that the lack of interest by Zaman in bringing perpetrators of May 9 violence to justice had resulted in weak cases against them, and that several suspects, including Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Muhammad Khan Bhatti, were given a clean chit in their cases.
Furthermore, they revealed that despite being the prosecutor general, Zaman was opposed to the government.
