Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen (retd) Javed Nasir passed away on Wednesday after a prolonged illness, as confirmed by family sources.
He was 88. His Namaz-e-Janaza was offered after the Isha Prayer at Khalid Masjid Cavalry Ground Walton Cantt Lahore. A large number of people, including military and civil officials, attended his funeral prayer. Later, he was buried in the Cavalry Ground graveyard.
He was born in Lahore on December 22, 1936. He served as the Director-General of the ISI from 14 March 1992 until 13 May 1993.
Known as a member of Tablighi Jamaat, Nasir gained national prominence in 1988 when he played a pivotal role in cleaning Ujiri Camp.
Lt Gen Nasir also played his role in bringing the scattered Afghan Mujahideen to agree to the power-sharing formula to form the Afghan administration under President Mojaddedi in Afghanistan in 1992–93.
Later, he played an influential and decisive role in the Bosnian war when he oversaw the covert military intelligence program to support the Bosnian Army against the Serbs while airlifting the thousands of Bosnian refugees in Pakistan.
