Hira Mani appears to be in a fix once against. The actress/singer used Instagram to tell her followers about a beauty product. “Secret for glowing and spotless skin is Skin White 3 Day Glow Night Cream with Jojoba Oil which fades away blemishes, dark spots, evens out skin tone and makes skin fair and glowing in JUST 03 DAYS,” says the Do Bol star. Hira Mani is, in other words, supporting a skin-whitening product!
Even the product's name, "Skin White" is not acceptable these days and for supporting such a discriminatory product, the star is receiving public criticism on social media.
People instructed her to stop the endorsement of beauty creams, some also highlighted that every skin tone is beautiful and everyone should be happy with the skin color they have. One of them even went to extreme and wrote, ‘You should be extremely shameful for promoting a skin whitening cream’.
Nowadays, advertising whitening products is a horrible idea, especially in countries like Pakistan and India where brown skin is the standard.
Following the terrible death of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter campaign was launched. Since then, the casual racism and colorism that exists in all societies have been widely discussed. The word ‘whitening’ was removed from the name of a well-known skincare brand, and many other firms were forced to reconsider their marketing plans. Even a worldwide brand like ‘Fair & Lovely’ was forced to modify their name to ‘Glow & Lovely’ in order to win over the public. The acceptance of true skin tone was normalized, and the topic was discussed more.
Another Pakistani actress, Ayeza Khan also received a lot of anger when she promoted a whitening product back then. While other actresses and models discussed the colorism that exists and criticized the one who promoted the idea. Hira Mani nevertheless went and promoted a whitening cream despite all of this.
