The process of filing nomination papers for the vacant Senate seat from Sindh began Friday, with six candidates submitting their papers on the first day.
The seat fell vacant following the demise of senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Senator Taj Haider.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), nomination papers can be submitted until 5 PM on April 19 at the Provincial Election Commission office.
Prominent among those who received nomination papers on the opening day were PPP leaders Waqar Mehdi, Javed Nayab Leghari, Noman Sheikh, and Khalida Mendhro.
Naheed Wasi, the widow of the late Senator Taj Haider, also received nomination papers, potentially indicating her entry into the political fray.
The ECP had issued a public notice for the Senate election on April 17, outlining the election schedule. As per the notification, polling will be held in the Sindh Assembly on May 6, 2025, to elect the new Senator.
The contest is expected to draw attention given the political legacy of the late Taj Haider and the possible candidacy of his widow, Naheed Wasi, who could carry forward his ideological and political mantle.
