Oslo airport on Wednesday announced it was temporarily closed for air traffic as heavy snow hit transport across Scandinavia.

The airport said in a statement it would remain closed until at least 3:30 pm (1430 GMT).

"A new assessment will be made then," the airport said in a post to social media.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute issued warnings of heavy snow and wind in the area around the capital Oslo.

Most buses in Oslo were cancelled and train operator Vy announced that train routes were closed in large parts of eastern Norway.

In neighbouring Sweden, heavy snow led to multiple traffic incidents in western and southern parts, causing traffic jams along several key roads.

"The road surface is reported to be very slippery and the police are urging the public not to go out on the roads unless absolutely necessary," police said in a statement.

Sweden's national weather agency SMHI issued an alert for the capital Stockholm, warning of "strong winds in combination with snow."
