Two children lost their lives and one was injured after falling into an open sewer in Malir area of Karachi, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
According to police reports, five children were playing near an open sewer in Ghafoor Basti of Malir, when they stood on a manhole cover. Unfortunately, the cover could not support their weight and gave way, causing all five children to fall into the sewer.
Locals with the help of rescue workers managed to rescue three of the children.
However, despite their efforts, two of the children, identified as 4-year-old Hasnain and 11-year-old Talha, were unable to survive.
The injured child, Abbas, son of Imtiaz Lashari, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
According to police, investigations are underway, and legal action will be taken against those found negligent.
According to the residents of Karachi, open sewers and faulty manhole covers are a common sight in many parts of Karachi, posing significant risks to residents, particularly children. This incident again underscored the urgent need for municipal authorities to address these hazards and ensure that such accidents do not happen in the future, they urged.
