Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday condemned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led (PTI) government for attacking the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and said that ECP’s refusal to become PTI’s partner in vote rigging and engineering was being taken as ‘rebellion’.
In a statement issued here in Islamabad, the PPP chairman said that ECP had to conduct its business in accordance with the Constitution. “Threats to ECP to make it to toe PTI’s electoral fraud strategies have to be condemned in strong terms. The entire nation and its constitution stand by the ECP as the national institution,” he stated.
Bilawal said the demand for resignations of the chief election commissioner and members of the ECP was a blackmailing tactic on part of the PTI government, which made millions of dollars through foreign funding as a dubious political party to grab power.
The PPP chairman maintained that an independent election commission was necessary for a vibrant and genuine democracy and warned that attempts to subjugate and hold ECP hostage to whims of the PTI regime would be resisted by all democratic forces.
