Newly-appointed Vice Chancellor of Baba Guru Nanak University Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi has vowed to make it a global university and said its international campuses would be established across the world.
Prof. Asghar Zaidi, the Vice Chancellor of Government College University, is recently given additional charge as first Vice Chancellor of BGNU. He would hold the charge until the appointment of regular VC.
Vice Chancellor was visiting the BGNU campus land while formally assuming the charge of the university where he was briefed in detail about the University’s development plan.
Deputy Commissioner Raja Mansoor Ahmad, MPA Veerji Ramesh Aurora, Farooq Arshad international coordinator, Dr Zarqa Suharwardy Punjab Spokesperson, academics on Punjabi language, Sikhism, & Sikh Music, University Registrar and others were present.
Prof Zaidi hoped that the academic activities at BGNU would resume as soon as possible and the University would be made a centre of excellence in research on Sikhism and Punjabi language, culture and music.
However, he said all modern disciplines including Physics, Chemistry and Biology would also be taught at the University.
Prof. Zaidi also said many teachings of Baba Guru Nanak were the beacon of light for the people of all religions, and the University, established at his birthplace in his name, would play a key role in promoting tolerance and harmony at international level.
The VC appreciated the initiatives taken by the Government, Federal Minister Brig (r) Ejaz Shah, Chancellor, Governor of the Punjab Ch Muhammad Sarwar, and the efforts of District authorities, Nankana Sahib in acquiring a vast piece of land for the University and also boundary wall has been completed around it.
Talking to 24News, Spokesperson Punjab Government Dr Zarqa Suharwardy said Dr Zaidi wants to start academic activities for the University as soon as possible.
She said as the University’s building is still under construction, Dr Zaidi wants to initiate four disciplines virtually in three to four months.
She said initially courses in Sikhism, Punjabi language, culture and music would be started either virtually or through acquiring the space from available space in area’s colleges or schools.
