Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain of an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Monday granted to Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Punjab one-day transit remand of former Punjab chief minister and PTI President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Earlier, the court had reserved verdict on the ACE Punjab’s petition, seeking transit remand of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

Opposing the ACE’s petition, Sardar Abdur Razzaq, lawyer for the defendant, said that the allegation against his client was that he had hired the office staff when he was the chief minister. “Can’t a CM appoint a chief secretary (CS)? How on earth can the appointment of Muhammad Khan as the CS be termed going beyond one’s authority?” he questioned, adding, “Elahi did not violate any law while appointing Khan as the CS.”

He said the case registered against his client was ridiculous.

The counsel asserted that the chief minister had the authority to appoint his office staff.

He went on to say that Elahi was being politically victimized since January this year. “Whenever a court discharges him, he is arrested in yet another case,” he regretted.

He said that former chief minister was arrested again after he was discharged from a case yesterday. “The court can reject the petition, seeking Elahi’s transit remand,” he said.

The investigation officer (IO) said that an inquiry was underway against Elahi in a corruption case.

When the judge asked the defendant whether he knew that he was facing an inquiry, the latter replied that he did not have slightest idea that inquiry was underway against him.

Squad cars meet accident

Three vehicles in the squad taking Pervaiz Elahi to Adial Jail met an accident on Monday.

No one was injured as a quick U-turn taken by a vehicle caused the accident.
