Former president Asif Ali Zardari Wednesday left Islamabad for Karachi after appearing in an accountability court in the Toshakhana reference. Asifa Bhutto accompanied his father on way back home.

According to sources, Zardari had an informal conversation with the airport staff at the federal capital before the departure.

“I know you are finding it hard to make both ends meet. I’ll come again and give you 50 per cent pay raise,” the former president told the Airport Security Force personnel.

He also asked his escort as to why the airport was so deserted. Coronavirus might have cancelled some flights, the guard replied.

A few days before her appearance, the former president made a request to the accountability court for virtual appearance because of ailment and vulnerability to coronavirus. He also cited doctors’ advice for avoiding travel but to no avail.

On August 17, the court set September 9 as date to indict ex-president Zardari and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in the reference.

On August 18, the court ordered seizure of vehicles of ex-president Zardari and former premier Nawaz Sharif in the reference that states they (Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif) obtained cars from Toshakhana by paying 15 percent of their prices while Gilani is accused of facilitating them.
