George Soros has sparked a political tempest in India with his comments on the Adani Hindenburg crisis, sparking a volley of words between the BJP and Congress. Some BJP functionaries have suggested a nexus between Congress and Soros.
The BJP claims that the 92-year-old wants to "destroy" Indian democracy and that he wants "hand-picked" people to manage the country.
George Soros has stated that he intends to undermine India's democratic structure. He has declared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be his primary target. He has also stated that he will assist in the development of a system in India that will protect his interests.
Soros made pointed statements about Adani and the Indian government earlier this week while speaking at the Munich Security Conference.
He said, “Modi and business tycoon Adani are close allies. Their fate is intertwined. Adani is accused of stock manipulation and his stock collapsed like a house of cards. Modi is silent on the subject, but he will have to answer questions from foreign investors and in Parliament,"
George Soros added, “This will significantly weaken Modi's stranglehold on India's federal government and open the door to push for much-needed institutional reforms. I may be naïve, but I expect a democratic revival in India,"
George Soros is a Hungarian-born American banker, philanthropist, and activist noted for his successful investments and philanthropic work to promote democracy, transparency, and free expression. He also founded the Open Society Foundations, which provides funds to organisations and individuals who support these ideas.
Soros was born in 1930 in Budapest to an affluent Jewish family. The entry of the Nazis in Hungary in 1944 altered his early childhood. To avoid being deported to concentration camps, the family broke up and used phoney papers, changing their name from "Schwartz" to "Soros" to conceal their Jewish identity. In 1947, he relocated to London.
He got into the London School of Economics while working as a railway porter and waiter, where he studied philosophy under Karl Popper. Soros founded his own hedge fund in 1973, leading him to become one of the most successful investors in US history.
Soros gambled against the British pound in 1992, resulting in currency depreciation and severe financial losses for the Bank of England. He is expected to have made a $1 billion profit in the process.
