Despite a marked improvement in Lahore’s air quality over the last few days, the Punjab capital, with the air quality index (AQI) recorded at 395, was again ranked as the second most polluted city in the world on Tuesday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The AQI over the DERP office was recorded at 503 followed by the US consulate where it stood at 431.
Similarly, it was 312 over Johar Town and 252 over Askari-10.
The Met Office said that there were no chances of rain in Lahore in November.
It predicted that the maximum temperature in the city would reach 25 degrees Celsius later in the day.
On the other hand, Karachi was at the fourth position in the world in terms of extremely poor air quality.
The AQI in the city stood at 196, while Multan, with AQI recorded at 386, emerged as the second most polluted city in the country.
There was a nip in the air as the minimum temperature in the city was recorded at 14 degrees Celsius, while the weather department predicted that it would remain 27 degrees Celsius on the maximum side.
The humidity level in the air was recorded at 94 per cent.
At the same time, smog has started retreating in Punjab and the situation is not as threatening as it was a week ago.
The air quality has improved considerably in a majority of areas.
The development prompted the Punjab government on Monday to order the opening of all educational institutions in the province, except Lahore and Multan divisions.
Similarly, the timings of opening and closing of bakeries and restaurants were also changed.
However, doctors advised people not to get complacent and wear facemasks before stepping out of their homes.
Contractor stage protest in Lahore
Lahore Building Contractors Association (LCBA) on Tuesday held a protest demonstration on Ghazi Road, Lahore against complete ban on construction work due to thick smog in the city.
The protestors were holding banners and chanting slogans against the government. They demanded government to remove the ban on construction work immediately.
He said now a marginable decreased being witnessed in smog situation so government should allow builders to restart their operations.
The protesters said that its very hard for them to meet daily expenditure of their homes in current era of inflation. The government instead of providing them relief started creating difficulties for them.
Chairman Lahore Building Contractors Association Sarwar Jutt, Vice-Chairman Attaullah Mayo, Azam Akram, Falak Sher, Hafiz Naseer Awan, Haji Abdul Ghafoor, Malik Abdul Jabbar and huge numbers of labour participated in the demonstration.
