One Chinese national was killed and another injured Monday evening in an attack on a gold mine in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities said Tuesday.

Unidentified armed men carried out the raid in the Mambasa territory in the province of Ituri, Colonel Jean-Baptiste Matadi Muyapandi, the region's administrator, told AFP.

"There was one dead and one injured on the Chinese side," while a policeman was attacked by the assailants "who took some money and a few grams of gold," he added.

Attacks on mining sites and convoys are frequent in Ituri -- a province plagued by violence from several armed groups.
