Fast University Lahore has punished dozens of students including suspending three for posting “inappropriate memes” of teachers on social media.

Three students were temporarily expelled while several others have been given different penalties.

According to a BBC report, a notification issued by the university three days ago claimed that the memes were shared in a Facebook group called 'Fast Lahore Posting'.

Since the notification went viral on social media, Fast University administration has been criticized not for expelling the students only for ‘sharing memes’.

A spokesman for Fast University Lahore Hassan Ahmed told the BBC that the memes were "indecent and personal" and that the confessions of most of the convicted students had been recorded before the disciplinary committee took action.

One of the students against whom action has been taken by the university told the BBC that he also condemned Nazeeba (inappropriate) memes, but "most of the people on this list are innocent."

However, the university spokesman claimed that Fast University had evidence through which meme uploaders had been identified.

He said, "These memes were edited by photoshop using personal photos of female teachers. It can have an impact on their personal lives, so this is a very important step."

There were 25 student names in the Fast University notification and 13 are currently enrolled in university while 12 are alumnus.

The alleged alumnus students are asked to upload apology letters on their respective social media accounts otherwise their degrees might be cancelled.

Out of the 12 currently enrolled students involved in meme-sharing scam, one student has been expelled for one year while two have been expelled for one semester each. While remaining eight students will get grades deduction and they will have to upload apology letters on their respective social media accounts.

All students who have not been expelled will also perform ‘cleaning tasks’ at the university premises.
