Power cuts follow rain after wind, thunderstorm in Punjab

Power outages have been reported in most parts of Punjab, including provincial capital, as rain followed wind and thunderstorms, 24NewsHD TV Channel reported on Sunday.

In the provincial capital, reports of power cuts were aired in Allama Iqbal Town, Gulshan-e-Ravi and adjoining areas. Lesco sources reported the areas of Sanda, Islampura, Ravi Road, Shadbagh and adjacent localities experienced power cuts because of windstorm.

According to a spokespersons of the Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco), a hundred feeders tripped leaving Multan, Khanewal, Muzafar Gharh, DG Khan and Vehari without power. However, Mepco spokesmen said Chief Executive Officer Ikramul Haq issued directives to the person concerns to solve the problems at the earliest.  The teams are in field after the weather got normal, added the official. Power cuts were also reported in Faisalabad, Bahalwapur, Melsi, Pakpatan, Duniapur.

Similar reports have been received from Sherghar, Ahmadpur Sharqia and Khanqa Dogaran.

Deaths in storm-related incidents

In Talagang area, a man and his sister sustained serious injuries after a wall collapsed in windstorm. They were rushed to a local hospital where the man succumbed. In Thokar Niaz Baig of Lahore, a man died and another three sustained injuries in the storm-related incidents. A child was reported to have been died in a wall collapse in Layyah.

Monsoon predicted next month 

Earlier, the Meteorological Department forecast rain after wind and thunderstorm in parts of Punjab eastern Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir. It added the weather will remain hot and dry in most parts of the country.

The monsoon season is expected to begin in Pakistan in the first week of July, according to the Met Office and Sindh capital may receive heavy rainfall like the previous year. The likely rainfall during July – September monsoon weather duration is 140.8 mm, according to the weather report.
