When Anushka Sharma made her feature debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Aditya Chopra's romance comedy Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in 2008, she was just 20 years old. But in a previously published interview, Anushka acknowledged that her conceit existed before—not after—she became an actor.
What is the most conceited thing Anushka has ever done? is a question posed to her in a previous interview with fellow actor Koel Purie. She responds, “I was very arrogant before I became an actor on screen. I didn't speak to too many people in school and all that. I was really, really like snobbish.”
“I'm really happy I became an actor. Because I really got a reality check, when I became an actor, from Aditya Chopra. He said, ‘You are doing the film, but you’re not the most good looking girl.' Till then, I used to think I'm the most good looking girl. In my head, I was the most good looking girl. I mean, come on! But then he told me. And I was like, ‘Oh, achha (okay),'” Anushka continued.
Anushka received accolades for his first-ever performance in a movie that became a box office success. Since Kajol and Aishwarya Rai dated Aditya Chopra before Anushka in the director's two prior successful films, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and Mohabbatein (2000), respectively, she had large shoes to fill as the main lady opposite Shah Rukh.
Anushka was additionally signed as a talent by Aditya's production company, Yash Raj Films. She went on to feature in their landmark productions, including the blockbuster sports drama Sultan (2016) directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, starring Salman Khan, and Manish Sharma's 2010 directorial debut Band Baaja Baaraat, as well as Yash Chopra's 2012 swan song Jab Tak Hai Jaan. She has participated in the criminal dramas Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl directed by Manish Sharma in 2011, the theft drama Badmaash Company by Parmeet Sethi in 2010, and the love drama Sui Dhaaga directed by Sharat Kataria in 2018. Anushka's upcoming film, Chakda 'Xpress, is produced by Clean Slate Films, her brother Karnesh Ssharma's production company.
