Benazir Bhutto being remembered

The 70th birthday of the first women prime minister of an Islamic state Benazir Bhutto is being marked today (June 21).

The Daughter of the East was born on June 21, 1953, in Karachi and studied at Harvard and Oxford universities.

She remained a student leader at Oxford University and was considered among the most intelligent women in the world.

She met many world leaders at a young age as she used to accompany her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on foreign trips in her childhood

After the arrest of her father in 1977, she entered the field of politics. 

Along with his mother Begum Nusrat Bhutto, he fought the dictatorship of General Zia, braving all odds.

In 1982, Benazir Bhutto was elected as the chairperson of the Pakistan People's Party.

She arrived in Lahore after exile in 1986 and received the biggest historic reception. She visited all over the country.

In 1987, Benazir Bhutto tied the knot with Asif Ali Zardari.

In the 1988 general elections, she was elected as the first woman Prime Minister of a Muslim state.

However, her government was toppled by then-President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.

But she stood firm for democracy and in 1993, she was re-elected the PM.

In 1996, her government was toppled again and she went into exile.

In 2007, she made a comeback to the homeland. As she landed in Karachi, she was accorded a warm welcome. Her convoy was targeted by terrorists at Karsaz in which more than 250 people embraced martyrdom.

Shaheed Benazir was holding election rallies across the country. On December 27, 2007, on his way back from addressing a successful rally at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi, she embraced martyred in a terror strike.
