Great-granddaughter of Sir Ganga Ram and US senator Kesha Ram visits Lahore

US senator Kesha Ram, the great-granddaughter of Sir Ganga Ram on Monday visited Lahore High Court, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.   

She was accorded a warm welcome by the lawyer community at the elegantly decorated bar room venue in Lahore High Court. She visited the building that was erected under the supervision of her great-grandfather Sir Ganga Ram in 1889.

Earlier, Kesha Ram spent a busy day in Lahore visiting several historical places. She was accompanied by her husband Hinsdale.  

She visited Sir Ganga Ram’s house in Taxali, where Lahore Sangat placed a plaque, “Sir Ganga Ram, Civil Engineer, Philanthropist used to live here”. The visitor also prayed at her great-grandfather’s Samadhi located at Ravi Road.

An American politician and activist also took a round of the Walled City.

She arrived at Delhi Gate in a colourful rickshaw. The distinguished guest also saw the Shahi Hamam, Craft House, Gali Surjan Singh, and Wazir Khan Mosque. She appreciated the restoration work. She also enjoyed traditional food. She was impressed with the indigenous traditional Lahori khabas.

Ms Hinsdale also visited the residences of Ustad Daman and iconic singer Noor Jahan. She told the hosts that Noor Jahan was the favourite singer of her father.

Sir Ganga Ram, a distinguished engineer, and philanthropist is considered the father of modern Lahore for his huge contributions to the urban fabric of Lahore in the form of many landmark buildings that are treasures of architecture.

He designed and built the General Post Office, Lahore Museum, Aitchison College, Mayo School of Arts (now NCA), Ganga Ram Hospital, Lady Mclagan Girls High School, the chemistry department of the Government College University, the Albert Victor wing of Mayo Hospital, the Hailey College of Commerce, Ravi Road House for the Disabled, the Ganga Ram Trust Building on The Mall and Lady Maynard Industrial School. He also constructed Model Town, once the best locality of Lahore, the powerhouse at Renala Khurd as well as the railway track between Pathankot and Amritsar. He built Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lady Mclagan School and Renala Khurd Power House with his own money.

In the words of Sir Malcolm Hailey, the governor of Punjab, “He won like a hero and gave like a Saint”.
