Will CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja will get an extension?

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja’s five-year tenure will end on January 26, 2025 while on the other hand the government is considering to extend his tenure through a constitutional amendment, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.


Sources said that the federal government will amend Article 215 of the Constitution in order to accommodate the CEC.


After passage of the amendment from the National Assembly and the Senate apparently with majority vote, the Chief Election Commissioner and other members of ECP will be able to stay on their seats or till the appointment of new CEC and the ECP members.


It is necessary to mention here that a notification about appointment of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja was issued on January 24, 2020. After approval from the President, the notification was issued by Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs in this regard.


Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja had taken oath of the office on January 27, 2020.
