Akbar S. Babar, one of the founding fathers of the PTI, said on Tuesday that he had requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to freeze the PTI’s bank accounts because they were being used illegally, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, he, however, said he did not want the party to be banned or delisted.
He again said that the PTI’s intra-party elections did not meet legal requirements. “Intra-party elections are the basis of democracy. Until and unless these elections are held according to the rules, democracy cannot flourish,” he opined.
Giving an example of France, Babar said that a popular politician and her associates were barred from contesting the elections after it was found out that they had received illegal funds worth 4.5 Euros.
He further said this was because in democracies, the law took its course. “It is not seen which political party is popular, which is not.”
He was of the opinion that there were some people in the PTI who had created a monopoly within the party.
