With the unprecedented 173mm of rain recorded in just one hour in the Surjani Town area yesterday, many neighbourhoods of Karachi were still paralysed on Saturday morning with more downpour is the forecast during the next 24 hours.
On the other hand, three people were killed in rain-related accidents while power supply had also been suspended to many areas.
Pakistan Army relief teams are working with the civil administration in the monsoon rain-affected areas of Karachi. The water drainage was underway from low-lying areas, said Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement.
It is reported that over 200 feeders were tripped after which the residents of Orangi Town, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Sohrab Goth, Gulshan-e-Hadeed and many other localities spend the night without electricity.
However, the K-Electric says the supply is being restored after repairing the faults. But with more rain predicted, the crumbling infrastructure means the Karachiites should be ready for more hours of zero electricity.
Meanwhile, the two of these deaths were reported from the Memon Goth area of Malir where a lightning strike killed two youngsters. Another person was electrocuted in Machar Colony.
Earlier, it was reported that four people, including a father and his son, were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Tharparkar as heavy rain hit the region on Friday. Many cattle also died in the lightning strikes.
Downpour also lashed Mirpurkhas, Badin, Thatta, Hyderabad, Jamshoro and other adjoining areas.
As a whole, the amount of rain experienced in different parts of the port city was: Surjani Town 186mm, North Karachi 106.4mm, Nazimabad 106mm, Gulshan-e-Hadeed 86mm, Masroor Airbase 54mm, Saadi Town 36.9mm, Landhi 25mm, Jinnah Terminal 20.8mm and PAF Faisal Airbase 22mm.
It is the fifth weather spell to hit Karachi this monsoon season. The port city and other parts of lower Sindh have received more rain this year unlike Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and upper Punjab where below-normal rains are being recorded. In fact, Peshawar has experienced only one rainy day in the current monsoon season.
Although not officially confirmed, the rain hitting the Surjani Town area is perhaps record-shattering for a one-hour period.
As far as the rescue and relief efforts are concerned, the Rangers personnel reached the affected areas and started recovering the people stuck at their homes because of rising level of rainwater.
Last night, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah visited various areas and monitored the efforts launched by the administration to counter the alarming situation.
Many thoroughfares and streets are still submerged in the rainwater after up to five feet of water was earlier reported from many areas.
But the things are expected to worsen as the Met Office has predicted more rain not only in Karachi but also interior Sindh as well as parts of Balochistan where the last spell had played havoc, damaging road and other infrastructure.
It is warned that these areas will face urban flooding as well as flash floods in small rivers and streams.
