Electricity consumers may need to brace for another jolt as power distribution companies are preparing to impose an additional burden of more than Rs 310 billion on them, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) filed the petition to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a hike of Rs 5 per unit in the basic tariff for the FY2024-25 and the Nepra has scheduled a hearing on May 23, 2024, to address the matter.
The CPPA has requested permission from NEPRA to collect an additional Rs 310 billion from consumers under the power purchase price adjustment for the new financial year.
After the approval, the basic electricity tariff is expected to increase by Rs 5 per unit from the next financial year.
In the application, CPPA has proposed seven power purchase price scenarios.
It states that the power purchase price is estimated at Rs 25.3 to Rs 27. 11 per unit. After approval, the burden of power purchase prices is expected to reach Rs 3.58 trillion, putting an additional strain on electricity consumers.
