Different bar councils of the country have welcomed the appointment of the Supreme Court (SC) judge Justice Yahya Afridi as the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP), reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
Lahore, Bahawalpur and Islamabad bar councils have termed Justice Afridi’s appointment a good omen.
Similarly, a few bar councils in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa too have welcomed the appointment and have assured the new CJP of their full cooperation.
On Tuesday, President Asif Ali Zardari appointed Justice Afridi, who was third on the SC’s seniority list, as the next CJP after the Parliamentary Committee for Judges nominated him for the top judicial office with an overwhelming majority.
The appointment was made for a three-year period, with effect from October 26, 2024, said a press release issued from the President House on Wednesday morning.
The President made the appointment in the exercise of his powers conferred upon him under Articles 175A(3), 177 and 179 of the constitution.
