Kazakhstan has banned a pro-war Russian TV presenter from entering the country after she criticised its language policies.

The central Asian nation is an ally of Russia but has not backed its invasion of Ukraine and strives to maintain distance from Moscow.

Russian TV presenter Tina Kandelaki, also an executive at a state-owned media company, earlier this month criticised Astana for changing railway station names from Russian to Kazakh.

Kandelaki, who has spoken at rallies backing Russia's war, said it was a "dangerous trend" that the Kazakh language was "supplanting Russian" in the country.

"The state does not forgive this. It is unlikely she will come here, but if she does, she will not be able to enter," state media cited Kazakhstan's foreign ministry spokesman Aibek Smadiyarov as saying on Monday.

Russian is still widely spoken across ex-Soviet Kazakhstan and authorities are trying to boost the use of Kazakh.
