Paris public transport is to recruit some 5,000 people this year, including to prepare for the Summer Olympics, the head of the capital's publicly-owned transport company RATP said Tuesday.

The French capital's metro and suburban train system has been repeatedly criticised in the runup to the Games, scheduled for July 26 to August 11.

With an extra 600,000 to 800,000 passengers expected during the sporting events, RATP managing director Jean Castex has pledged to make improvements on time.

The RATP would recruit 600 new metro station agents before the Games, out of a 900 planned for the whole of the year, he said.

Overall this year, it hopes to find 120 new metro drivers and reassign 200 to the post from within the company, Castex said.

It also aims to hire 1,350 new bus drivers.

It was not immediately clear how many of these drivers would be ready to work in time for the Olympics.

The IDFM transport authority for the Paris region earlier this month flagged unsatisfactory service on several metro lines.

On Monday, it pointed to "high particle pollution" at three metro stops in the capital in a new air quality map.
