An Indian engineer from Gujarat's Vadodara has been kept in solitary confinement in Qatar for the last three months on the allegations of data stealing.
Amit Gupta, an Indian citizen residing in Qatar works in the IT firm Tech Mahindra and was detained by Qatari authorities on January 1, his mother Pushpa Gupta told the Indian media.
The parents have said their son is being held in detention without any charges since Jan 1. Amit's father Jagdish Gupta is a retired chief engineer of ONGC. Jagdish and his wife Pushpa also met Vadodara MP Hemang Joshi to convey their concerns and sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"On Jan 1, after the family finished having a meal at a restaurant, Amit was arrested by the security agency, which has kept him in solitary confinement since then," the parents claimed, quoted TOI. They said Amit moved to Qatar in 2013 after marrying Akanksha Gupta.
They said she approached the Indian embassy in Qatar multiple times. "He is our only support, and we want to know why he is being held without any charges. We appealed to the PMO, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian embassy but have not received any response," his father told media.
Meanwhile, people familiar with the matter told the news agency IANS that India is extending full support to Amit Gupta and the Indian Embassy is aware of his detention and the probe, the agency stated.
"Our embassy continues to provide all possible assistance in the matter and is closely following the case," IANS quoted a person familiar with the matter, as saying.
They said the Embassy has been in touch with the family. His mother also went to Qatar and met the Indian ambassador there. However, she said the envoy told her there had been no "positive response" so far in relation to Gupta's case, as per IANS.
