US and Sindh govt launch $9 million initiative  to combat tuberculosis in Pakistan

US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome, and Sindh Minister for Health and Population Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho launched a collaborative initiative aimed at addressing tuberculosis (TB), reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.


This joint effort between the United States and Pakistan signifies a crucial step forward in combating this disease.


US Ambassador Donald Bloom described TB, as a major health challenge in Pakistan.


The US Embassy spokesperson said Donald Blome visited Karachi along with Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho to inaugurate a joint program to combat tuberculosis.


According to details, it’s a five-year program named the Tuberculosis Local Organization Network (TB-LON), funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), with an investment of $9 million.


Its primary goal is to provide expert guidance and resources for Pakistan to effectively tackle TB.


This program will provide direct engagements with TB-affected communities and individuals in Sindh to reduce the number of people affected by the disease.



Moreover, US Ambassador Donald Bloom emphasized the strong partnership between the United States and the government of Sindh stating, “Tuberculosis is not just a disease affecting millions in Pakistan but it’s an illness that disrupts lives and livelihoods.


“Pakistan ranks fifth among countries with the highest rate of TB, but I am proud to say, that we are changing that with this groundbreaking $9 million initiative that will provide expert guidance and resources to help eradicate TB.


“This is a clear example of our future commitment to the people of Sindh.”


On the other hand, Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho expressed gratitude for the support from the US government and reaffirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services.


“We are confident that our joint efforts in addressing critical health challenges will bring a positive change in the lives of the people of Sindh.”


“Every year, 1 crore 6 lakh people suffer from this disease”, said Ezra Fazal Pehicho.


“13 lakh people lose their lives due to this disease”, she added.
