The Federal Cabinet in its session held in Islamabad on Tuesday has given in-principle approval to castration punishment for rape convicts, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Prime Minister Imran Khan presided over the cabinet meeting that approved castration punishment for rape convicts.
The approval was given after the law ministry presented a draft of the anti-rape ordinance, which also includes increasing women’s role in policing, fast-tracking rape cases and witness protection.
Imran Khan on the occasion said no such delay will be tolerated. “We need to ensure a safe environment for our citizens.”
Imran Khan said that the legislation will be transparent and clear with strict enforcement. He said the rape survivors will be able to register complaints without fear, adding that the government will protect their identity.
Citing the example of foreign countries, he stated that in foreign countries paedophiles are properly registered and tracked down by the governments. He further added that the government could also deal with rapists and sexual abusers by handing them exemplary punishments.
The cabinet members discussed the proposed legislation to prevent incidents of rape in the country and to make society safe.
The TV channel quoting its sources reported that ministers including Federal Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda, Senator Azam Swati and Minister for Religious Affairs Noor-ul-Haq Qadri supported the death penalty for rape offenders.
The legal team had completed work on the draft rape law ordinance and the country will adopt castration law, the sources maintained.
On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf Senator Faisal Javed Khan took to his Twitter handle and said that the law will soon be presented before the Parliament.
It is pertinent to note that in an interview earlier, PM Imran Khan had suggested public hanging and chemical castrating the convicts to curb rising sexual violence in the country.
Affected women or children can file their complaints without fear as the Prime Minister has directed to take special care to protect the identities of the affected women and children. “We have to give environment to people,” the Prime Minister said.
